On March 13, Dr. Neil Woodall of Georgia Neurological Surgery and Comprehensive Spine performed the first mechanical thrombectomy to ever be performed in Athens. Mechanical thrombectomy is a rapid, minimally invasive treatment for patients suffering from stroke. Up to 1/3 of patients with acute stroke suffer from occlusion of a large vessel in the brain by a blood clot, or thrombus, which puts a large territory of brain at risk. During a mechanical thrombectomy, the obstruction can be retrieved from inside the vessel, immediately restoring blood flow to the previously at-risk brain tissue. In most cases, mechanical thrombectomy results in drastically improved neurological outcomes and decreased rates of death and disability when compared to medical treatment alone.
Until Dr. Woodall’s arrival in Athens, these services would have only been available in Augusta or Atlanta. Dr. Woodall has specialized training in the treatment of patients with both hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke. We are pleased to offer care locally for patients with these time-sensitive disease processes.
